Several years ago, I made this 404 error image for my own web site. It’s a ripoff of one I saw on 4chan once, and I don’t use it anymore.

I bring this up because I found that someone was admiring my work on webdesign2day.com! It’s an old article now, but I was never told about it. I found out while looking at my site’s analytics, where I found out some pages on deviantART that link to this site since I used to have an account there. After a bit of research, I found the article. I’m a bit bothered that I didn’t find out about the article until now, but I’m more excited about the recognition. Yay!

What’s with the mouse, you may ask? I created this when I was excited about a character I created called Nugget, a computer mouse. She has a Windows logo on her side because… well, I prefer Windows. She was my site’s little mascot, but I thought I probably shouldn’t have her on my site if I’m trying to be more professional. I have missed Nugget horribly, and I hope one day I can bring her back somehow in whatever small way possible.

Here’s another Nugget piece I did. This one was inspired by those times when you need to delete old files, but are scared to do so in case you realize you needed them later. Nugget has no such fears.

Before I saw this site, I hadn’t heard of equine-assisted learning. It’s a really cool concept to me. I’d definitely like to try it sometime. I love horses and I definitely think they can be therapeutic.

Anyway, this hasn’t been a very difficult site to put together. I managed to get about 95% of it done in five or six hours. I worry a little bit about it being one of the more image-heavy sites I’ve done, but what can you do?

It’s a group of students creating all kinds of media about games, including video series, reviews, editorials, previews, webcasts, and more. The team is led by UWW lecturer Spencer Striker, the creator of GameZombie. For students, contributing to GameZombie could mean some pretty nice resume additions.

This is my first semester working with GameZombie, and I’m one of three students on the web team. I’ve been helping the web team leader tweak the site design to be more visually appealing. It still needs a little more tweaking and we need to do more work with other teams to get everything looking perfect, but the big stuff is done.

The site is in WordPress, and it used to be a modified version of the 2010 theme. I recreated the theme and customized it to fit GameZombie’s needs. I also designed the home page layout to feature certain GameZombie shows and videos. Check it out at gamezombie.tv.

While I’m really glad to be part of this move, I’m also a little sad. Because of this whole move, I haven’t had as many chances to be creative in web design lately. Maybe sometime soon I can start doing some freelance work and get my creative kicks that way.

Anyway, this site is almost ready to go live. This move went very quickly–I think it took me about a week to get all the content moved over from the current site. The department is now reviewing the content, which might take a while since they want to update it.

The site is almost done now. It just needs approval from the department. It’s taken a very long time to get this going because the department wanted us to wait until they were ready to update their content, which took months.

A few people have told me they don’t like this design much because they feel the red/maroon and purple don’t go together. I sort of agree, so I might need to choose a different accent color. No big deal though; it should be an easy fix.

If you pay attention to my blog, you might’ve noticed I already created a redesign for HPERC. Well, that one got tossed out the window now that we’re being consistent across departments in the college. So, I’m calling this a re-redesign.

Anyhow, I’m super eager to get this site live. You might understand why if you look at the current site–in my eyes, it’s poorly organized and some parts are outdated. I think it’s just a mess.

I generated a word cloud today from this web site’s RSS feed using Wordle, and I have to say it taught me something.

These are the top 30 words in my RSS feed right now.The bigger words are the most used words in the feed, and the smaller words are less used. What have I learned?

Clearly I use the word “like” too much. I should eliminate it completely from my vocabulary.

I don’t think I have enough posts because this word cloud doesn’t really encompass what this site is about (which is web design).

“Wedding” is pretty big, yet I only have one post about me getting married. This reinforces the notion that I don’t have enough posts.

Even though this doesn’t really define my web site, it’s still pretty to look at.

If you have an RSS feed, I recommend making a word cloud. It’s educational.

After much discussion with the university webmaster, it was decided that all web sites within the College of Education & Professional Studies should look similar for the sake of easy navigation (see my posts about an OESH redesign and an HPERC redesign–the designs are very different from each other) and following web standards.

We’ve been grappling with this idea for a while and have finally come to terms with it. I’m very happy about it too because I strongly believe in consistency and ease of use. So, I made a design that all the departments and offices will follow, except they’ll all have a different accent color.

The Occupational & Environmental Safety & Health Department’s site is already done! See it here. Now I’m working on getting HPERC lookin’ good.
